Welcome Speaker

SSCA 2012 Conference, Keynote Speaker:

Julie Hedgepeth Williams grew up hearing her great-uncle Albert Caldwell tell the story of how he and his wife and baby survived the Titanic in 1912.  Julie was fascinated with the story and must have pestered Albert a lot, because she heard the story often.  It was Albert’s place in history that helped inspire Julie to major in History and English at Principia College.  After a career as a newspaper journalist in Clinton, North Carolina, Julie enrolled at University of Alabama for a master’s and then a PhD, both focusing on media history.  She is the past president of the American Journalism Historians Association and teaches journalism part-time at Samford University in Birmingham.  She and her husband, Evan, have two teenage sons, Weston and Alden.  Alden is named for the baby in her Titanic family.

“My new book, A Rare Titanic Family, is here.  It’s about my great-uncle, Albert Caldwell, who survived the Titanic, along with his wife and baby. Check out the book’s website at https://sites.google.com/site/raretitanicfamily, or on Facebook at A Rare Titanic Family.  The book is available at any retailer or at www.newsouthbooks.com.”

“A Rare Titanic Family is a rare work indeed.  Julie Williams has taken a seemingly ordinary family and not only describes in detail their experiences in the worst sea disaster of their era, but also describes the fascinating and unusual circumstances which led them to be on board the Titanic.”
– Don Lynch, author of Titanic — An Illustrated History
“I highly recommend A Rare Titanic Family to anyone who is interested in the Titanic disaster or — indeed — to anyone who is interested in a fascinating human interest story.”
– George Behe, author of On Board RMS Titanic
