Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama has a long tradition of producing outstanding scholars, athletes and artists. We are looking for outstanding teachers to renew that tradition and focus on excellence at the school. To facilitate that, the Montgomery Public School Board has authorized an exciting incentive program for teachers who want to be a part of this effort.

Teachers hired to serve at Lee will receive available stipends – above their salary – of up to $12,650 per teacher over the course of two years. The stipends will be earned in the following manner:

Sign on bonus: $5,000 year one; $2,500 year two.

Student achievement bonus $1,000 year one; $1,000 year two – based on specific results.

Professional Development (PD) $750 year one; $500 year two.

2012 summer PD begins July 30 for five to seven days and includes teambuilding, collaborative teaching techniques, communication skills, etc. and subject specific training.

Teacher attendance bonus $250 year one; $250 year two.

Tutoring $700 year one; $700 year two.

Yes – teachers will earn the extra money. On the other hand, most of what is required is just part of the normal routine for outstanding teachers. One day of tutoring per week, summer PD, collaborative teaching, and good attendance are all part of what most teachers already do. We are looking for teachers who communicate well with their students, parents, fellow faculty, staff and administration. Additionally, we are especially interested in experienced and highly skilled teachers who are passionate about student achievement. Teachers must be willing to commit to Lee for two years.

We have already begun interviews for the Lee positions, and I am confident that we are building a team that will be a model for MPS and the state. If you are interested in being considered, please go to our website, www.preparingstudentsforlife.com and apply under the Join Team MPS tab no later than Monday, May 11. Applications received after May 11 will be considered on the basis of need.

If you have any questions about the application process or about what the expectations are, please contact Kim Pitts at 334-223-6730 or @ kim.pitts@mps.k12.al.us.

Our focus is restoring the tradition of excellence at Lee by putting the programs and the people in place that will provide students with the instruction, tools, and student/teacher relationships needed to succeed. I hope you will consider being a part of that team.

The Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC, which was completed in 2007, stated categorically that “warming of the climate system is unequivocal” and that most of the warming that had taken place since the middle of the last century was very likely the result of increase in the concentration of anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The term ‘very likely’ in this instance conveys a probability of over 90%. Yet, most surveys of public perceptions and attitudes in the past have seemed to indicate that climate change is something that would really affect economic activities and human well-being only some time in the future. This conclusion has now to be reviewed in the light of new scientific evidence.

The IPCC has recently brought out a Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (Srex). The evidence produced in this report shows that climate change has already led to changes in climate extremes, such as heatwaves, record high temperatures in many regions, and heavy precipitation in the past half century. Climate extremes, or even a series of non-extreme events, in combination with social vulnerabilities and exposure to risks, can produce climate-related disasters. Policies to avoid, prepare for, respond to and recover from the risks of disaster can reduce the impact of these events and increase the resilience of people exposed to extreme events.

At the same time, adaptation alone would not be adequate as a response to deal with projected climate change in the future. In other words, tackling climate change would entail creating the capacity to adapt to these events essentially at the local level, but also mitigating the emissions of greenhouse gases at the global level. There is reason to accept that human society would sooner, rather than later, pursue such a path in response to growing understanding and awareness related to climate change.

A recent poll carried out by Gallup early in March this year has found that about half of Americans, 52%, say the effects of global warming have already begun to happen, consistent with views since 2009. However, this remains down from prior years, when as many as 61% believed global warming was already manifesting itself. However, while barely half of Americans agree that the effects of global warming are already manifest, an additional 29% say the effects will start to happen within a few years (4%), sometime in their lifetime (10%) or sometime further into the future (15%). Around 15% of Americans say the effects will never happen. What is relevant is that almost two-thirds of those polled believe that climate change will happen in their respective lifetimes.

Srex came up with a number of findings and some key conclusions, including (a) an observed increase in the length or number of warm spells or heatwaves in many regions of the globe, (b) increase in the frequency of heavy precipitation events or increase in proportion of total rainfall from heavy falls over many areas of the globe, particularly in the high latitudes and tropical regions, and in winter, in the northern mid-latitudes, and (c) projected increase in intensity and duration of droughts in some regions of the world.

Brin referenced “very powerful forces that have lined up against the open Internet on all sides and around the world,” telling the paper that he didn’t think it would be possible to create the company he founded with Larry Page in today’s climate.

Brin, who reportedly took a lead role in confronting China over Internet censorship in 2010, said he had been proven wrong in his belief that it wouldn’t be possible for an authoritarian government to restrict the Internet for very long.
“I thought there was no way to put the genie back in the bottle, but now it seems in certain areas the genie has been put back in the bottle,” he told the The Guardian.
